What do you assume to be true about ?

The human population I would like to address here is prisoners. I always had a certain assumption that if you commit a crime then you go to jail and you should be freed again when you have changed and become a better person or atleast trying to become one. But I assume the prison system does not works that way. With  the  increase in prison population every year there is also increase in crime rates. So, I don't understand why the prison or legal system is so complicated and why law always provides the prisoners to escape and commit a crime again.
The amount of money that government spends on these inmates could be utilized on better things like health and education. Most of the time the system itself is initiating the crime by providing all these facilities inside the prison. So the question, "is the prison system trying to reduce its population or initiating it?" is contradictory.

  1. Hi Sonia,

Thank you for your post. You bring up a lot of good points here, but it does not completely answer the questions that I posed.

From my understanding of this post, it seems that you have some basic assumptions about the prison system, rather than the prisoners themselves. Is this correct?

Also, how did you develop your assumption(s) about the prison system? (This is a question that I posed in the original assignment, not addressed here.)

Also, what do you think will be the most challenging aspect of doing research on this population?

I look forward to your responses.

    Sincerely,
    Professor Wexelbaum

  2. Yes I do have some basic assumptions about the prison system but I also have some assumptions about the prisoners which I lacked to address on my previous post. My assumption about prisoners is that when the law gives them the chance to improve and become a better person why they do not utitize or even try to be one. Most of the time prisoners who are released goes back to prison within a week or less. So do they think that being in a jail is a easy way of living where they don't have to take responsibility of any one or pay bills or is life really hard for them outside once they come out of jail?
I have not actually faced any prisoners in my life but I have come to learn about this assumption from friends, books, media and society.
I think the risk of doing this research would be knowing the actual reasons besides whatever is written on books or articles; may be meeting someone who have had experience with jail and knowing from them the real answers.
